Kent Park Spring Classic

The biggest little race everyone loves.

A Kent Park Thank You

Thanks to all the riders who raced Kent Park. It was certainly one of our better years as far as weather goes.
Special thanks to Michael Edwards and Mark Guthart without whom this event would crumble into total chaos under it’s own weight. Thank you to Cindy Shelangoski for helping with registration.
Thanks to Bikes To You for bringing out the tasty donuts, it’s always nice to have extra support.
And of course thanks to Lee and Jane for taking the cake! (the new tradition at Kent Park)

Well, its morning and I’m feeling much better, a good nights sleep and a tomato onion quiche and I’m back in business.  Looks like Mark did a great job sorting out riders, check out the Kent Park page on this site for the full results!

Kent Park Highlights! Well.. kinda just the part I saw.

So here it is, nine hours after the race and I’m still a bit wobbley, my legs are not happy and I need a nap I’m not going to get. If you’re looking for results, it might take a little while, Mark did a great job sorting out the huge packs that rolled in and it takes a while to write that all down. As for my race, it was great! I really enjoy riding with the Iowa riders and I’m pretty grateful I’m able to hang with the pack that we had today, even if I’m unable to make much of an impact. After all, I don’t come into form till the third week of November. Now for the highlight of the race, of course it was the break away riders that one but I didn’t see that. Nope, I’m talking about my favorite performance of the day, James Carrico’s Attack shortly after the start of the final lap. I really was cheering for him to stay away, he was clear for a heck of a long time. The pace to chase him went into an uncomfortable area for me, I could feel my only sprint eroding like my bald rear tire. I’m not sure when or if we really caught him but he finished first in the cat 4’s and right up with the top guys. Congratulations to all those who rode there own personal race in our biggest landmark event, it really is the riders that make this race so much fun, everyone in every placing. For me, I had a fun race but I’m ruined for the rest of the day, I can’t believe I willingly do this. It was worth it, but it will be more worth it by the morning.

Kent Park Update

There are still some spots open for Kent Park. Registration is in the 90’s now.

The gates to the park will open at 7:00 am and number pick up will begin as soon as we can get set up. Racing will start at 8:30.

There will be people directing you where to park. If you may for any reason need to leave during the race i.e. on call for work, you will need to park in a lower lot that is not on the course. Let them know if this pertains to you.
Once the race starts, no traffic will be allowed on the course!
As soon as the race is finished the park will be opened back up to traffic, so be aware of this when cooling down.

Please be respectful of the park and the park rangers. They have been very gracious in the use of the park for this event so if given the chance a quick thank you to them would be great. Please pick up all trash, wrappers, bottles etc.

We are once again racing for pies and beer, please race safe!

Everyone keep your fingers crossed and hope the rain holds off until the afternoon.
Thanks,
Conn Day

Thanks to the 33 riders who braved the cold morning to come out and race at Lake Macbride. This was a 2 hour race with the lead group completing 31 laps around the course. I believe someone mentioned about 45 miles were covered.
We had a team from Wisconsin as well as a riders from Indiana and Connecticut.
Local rider, Jim Cochran, pretty much dominated and rode away with the win.
Other riders of note, Jimmy Carrico’s 5th place finish (16 years old and didn’t he just start racing last year?).
7th place Ben Lewis who was riding in his second race ever.
And there’s my husband who says his stench as a rider has already reached mid season form. He says somewhere around an hour and forty minutes he passed gas and even it passed him back.
I think it was unanimous, everyone was glad to be back out on the roads.
We sure did miss the smiling face of our friend, John Meehan. He would have loved this race!

What do you get for 30 minutes a day?

Well, if you’re anything like me, training 30 minutes a day will get you about and hour and forty minutes into a two hour race. I’m sure it’s not all training, perhaps a bit of gu might have made a difference, but who trains for 2 hours anyhow? If you would have asked me at an hour thirty I would have told you I’m feeling ok, way better then I expected. But one more time up the hill and I thought to myself “That seemed harder then I remember it being.” The next time around and I was in my easiest gear seemingly alone in the park wondering when I was to be lapped. Twenty minutes to go and I bonk, thoughts of recovering and finishing with some dignity were vetoed by my legs. It took a bit longer to be lapped then I thought and my legs rebounded for at lest 8 seconds. Left with no way to finish happy, I gazed out at the ice fisherman I hadn’t noticed before. I wondered how thick the ice could be or how deep the water is that close to shore. Would the ice be thicker if the water was shallower? That was my guess, but then are there really any fish in such shallow water under the ice? What do fish do in icy water anyhow? By then I was done.
Will this motivate me to train more then I do? Nope. I had a great time today. I could train inside on a trainer I guess, but I can’t really stand it. My schedule only allows 30 minutes a day and that’s enough to do what I enjoy doing. I love our races, I enjoy seeing other riders put in huge attacks and blowing myself up by following too hard. Sure I’m not the rider I could be, but I’m at least the rider I want to be. I had fun, and that’s what our races are all about.
Thanks for the ride.

The race is on, almost positive

Howdy,
Sorry for the late reply, it’s clear here but just a bit chilly.
Here is the latest info on the race.
Thanks,
Michael

It looks as thought the predicted weather forecast of rain/snow is moving through to the North of us so the race will go on.
However, if things change and the snow starts to fly check bikeiowa in the morning or call 573-1011 or 573-7667 to make sure things are a go.

Then race is a 2 hour multiple lap race in Lake Macbride State Park in Solon. Each lap is a little under 3 miles. You are not required to race the entire two hours to be considered a finisher you will be placed by laps completed. This will be a good warm up for Kent Park.

Registration is at the beach parking area at 8:00. Race will begin at 9:00. Cost is $13. Usual beer and baked goods for awards.

Race Recap

Howdy all,While the full results will be posted some time soon, I thought I’d update the site a bit with our season’s first race recap. It seemed to be the general consensus with the group that it was mildly cooler then expected. As far as I was concerned the weather was fine, it was my fitness that was put into question. I’ve logged at least 20 minutes on the indoor trainer this winter season, relying mostly on the open road for race readiness. This winter was not the best riding partner, it seemed lonely out there. I can only guess others wheels have been worn down sitting in place, propped in a trainer while base miles were cranked up. During an in race discussion with Tracy on how hard I thought racing had become since the prior year, he commented “We’ve got the base, but not the intensity.” While I replied, “I’ve got the intensity, not the base.” When told of my 30 minute training routine, he estimated I was just about to hit my limit. I agreed.

I was wrong however, even if I did miss the winning break of three riders just minutes later. My intensity showed itself in small bursts of “Hey, I’m feeling ok now.” Then my base showed itself with “Gary, if I fall back don’t wait”. All in all Gary and I spent most of the race trying to stay away from last years junior, this years cat 3, with a relentless base that bordered on single minded intensity. So, how did this race end? We finished of course.

The race is on!!
